Intrinsic factor is a protein produced in the stomach that is essential for Vitamin B12 absorption. It binds with Vitamin B12, allowing it to be absorbed in the small intestine. In conditions like pernicious anemia, the body does not produce enough intrinsic factor, leading to poor absorption of B12 and resulting in deficiency. An intrinsic factor antibody test may be done if a B12 deficiency is suspected.
