Reverse T3 (rT3) is an inactive form of the thyroid hormone T3 that is produced when the body converts T4 into T3. High levels of rT3 may indicate reverse T3 dominance, which can lead to symptoms of hypothyroidism, such as fatigue and weight gain, even when standard TSH and T4 levels are normal. This condition often occurs during times of stress, illness, or starvation as the body conserves energy. If rT3 levels are elevated, your doctor may evaluate your thyroid function and overall health to determine the underlying cause.
