The HbA1c test works by measuring the percentage of haemoglobin that has glucose attached to it, known as glycated haemoglobin. Since red blood cells live for about 3 months, the test reflects average blood sugar levels over that period. A higher percentage of glycated haemoglobin indicates higher blood sugar levels, while a lower percentage suggests better blood sugar control. This test is widely used for diagnosing diabetes and monitoring how well a patient’s treatment plan is working. It provides a reliable long-term view of blood sugar management.
