PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a molecular diagnostic method used to detect the genetic material (RNA) of the dengue virus. It is highly specific and sensitive, making it an excellent tool for early diagnosis of dengue fever. PCR can detect the virus in the blood during the acute phase of infection, often before antibodies are detectable by ELISA. This makes it particularly useful for confirming a diagnosis in the early stages of the disease. PCR can also differentiate between the four dengue virus serotypes, providing valuable information for epidemiological studies and outbreak management. While PCR is highly accurate, it requires specialized equipment and trained personnel, and it is typically performed in reference laboratories.
