A CBC test is the primary diagnostic tool for detecting anemia. It measures the amount of red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin, and hematocrit. In anemia, these values are typically lower than normal, indicating the body isn't producing enough red blood cells or they’re being destroyed too quickly. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV), which measures the size of red blood cells, can help determine the type of anemia, such as iron-deficiency anemia (microcytic) or B12/folate deficiency (macrocytic). Based on CBC results, further tests may be recommended to pinpoint the cause of anemia.
