The methylmalonic acid (MMA) test is often used in conjunction with a Vitamin B12 test to detect B12 deficiency. MMA is a substance that increases when B12 levels are low because Vitamin B12 is required to metabolize MMA. Elevated MMA levels may indicate a deficiency, even if B12 levels appear normal. The MMA test provides a more detailed understanding of the body's ability to use Vitamin B12.
