How does Vitamin B12 deficiency affect red blood cells?

Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood cell production. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 leads to the production of abnormally large and irregularly shaped red blood cells, a condition known as megaloblastic anemia. These larger cells are unable to function properly, resulting in reduced oxygen transport throughout the body. Symptoms of this anemia include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, and shortness of breath. Early detection and treatment of a B12 deficiency can prevent further complications.
