A high TSH level in a thyroid function test typically indicates hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland is underactive and not producing enough thyroid hormones. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and dry skin. In this case, the pituitary gland increases TSH production to stimulate more thyroid hormone production. High TSH can also result from inadequate thyroid hormone medication. Your doctor will assess both T3 and T4 levels in addition to TSH to confirm hypothyroidism and adjust medication dosage if needed.
