While a thyroid function test can indicate hypothyroidism associated with Hashimoto’s disease, it does not directly diagnose the condition. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the thyroid, leading to thyroid hormone deficiency. Typically, the test will show high TSH and low T4 levels. To confirm Hashimoto’s, your doctor may order additional tests, such as anti-thyroid antibody tests, including anti-TPO (thyroid peroxidase antibodies), which are often elevated in this condition.
