When is the Apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) test recommended?
It is recommended in: Symptoms such as heartburn or indigestion, pain in the arm (more commonly the left arm, but maybe either arm), shortness of breath, headaches, upper back pain, general malaise (vague feeling of illness), pain, fullness, and/or squeezing sensation in the chest, jaw pain, toothache, nausea, vomiting, and/or general epigastric (upper middle abdomen) discomfort and sweating.
What does it measure?
The Apolipoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) test: Required to assess the Apo-A1 level in the blood if low HDL-cholesterol is detected and thereby determine the risk of myocardial infarction. This test is recommended if the individual has high triglyceride and cholesterol levels or has a family history of cardiovascular diseases. The test is also used to evaluate the effectiveness of the lipid treatment. Low levels of Apo-A1 are associated with low levels of HDL and impaired clearance of excess cholesterol from the body. Low levels of Apo-A1, along with a high concentration of Apo-B, are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. High levels of Apo-A1 are considered protective and can be independent of HDL levels.Apolipoprotein A is the taxi driver. This activates the enzymes that load cholesterol from the tissues into HDL and allows HDL to be recognized and bound by receptors in the liver at the end of the transport.
