A false-positive HIV test result occurs when the test indicates HIV infection despite the absence of the virus. This is rare and often due to cross-reactivity with other antibodies or improper test handling. Confirmatory testing, such as a second antigen/antibody test or nucleic acid test (NAT), is always conducted to validate the result.
