There are three main types of HIV tests: antibody tests, antigen/antibody tests, and nucleic acid tests (NATs). Antibody tests detect antibodies produced by the immune system in response to HIV. Antigen/antibody tests check for both HIV antibodies and p24 antigen, which appears early in infection. NATs detect the virus’s genetic material and are highly sensitive, often used for early detection or in high-risk cases. Each test has specific purposes, and your healthcare provider will recommend the most suitable one based on your risk factors and testing needs.
