The NS1 antigen is a non-structural protein of the dengue virus that is released into the bloodstream during the early stages of infection. The presence of NS1 antigen in the blood is an indication of an active dengue infection, often detectable within the first week of symptom onset, before the body has produced detectable levels of antibodies. The NS1 antigen test is part of the ELISA testing method and is highly useful for early diagnosis of dengue fever. Detecting NS1 antigen can help initiate timely treatment and prevent complications. It is especially valuable in the acute phase of the disease when antibody tests may not yet be positive.
