Both creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) tests are used to evaluate kidney function. The creatinine test measures the amount of creatinine in the blood, which is a waste product of muscle metabolism. The BUN test measures the amount of urea nitrogen, a waste product produced when protein is broken down. Elevated levels of either creatinine or BUN can indicate kidney dysfunction. Doctors often use both tests together to get a comprehensive view of how well the kidneys are filtering waste.
