    What Is a RBS Test?

RBS test means a random test to find glucose levels; it measures blood glucose regardless of when you last ate, and this test is analysed to diagnose diabetes. When the glucose level is 200 mg/dL or higher in the blood, the classic symptoms of high blood sugar are present, and the doctor may diagnose the person with diabetes. This test helps to evaluate how well the disease is being managed.

RBS Test assesses your overall health and detects various conditions, including infections and blood disorders. It is often used to monitor responses to treatments for conditions like anaemia and infection, chemotherapy or medications affecting blood cell production. Additionally, as part of routine health checkups, a RBS can uncover underlying health issues that may not yet show symptoms, enabling early diagnosis and better management of potential conditions.

    Blood Sugar Test Preparation

To ensure accuracy of the RBS test results, you should follow these precautions before the test:

Pre-requisites: Fasting is not required for a RBS test, so you can eat and drink normally before your appointment. However, you must inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as they may affect the test results.

Precautions Before the Test: Staying well-hydrated is crucial before the test. Drink plenty of water to ensure that your veins are easier to access during blood collection. It’s advisable to avoid smoking, alcohol, and strenuous physical activities or heavy exercise before the test.

    RBS Test Procedure

You can expect the experience the following during a blood test or blood draw:

    • You will have to sit comfortably on the chair, and a healthcare provider will check your arms for an easily accessible vein. This is the inner part of your arm on the other side of your elbow.

    • Once they have located a vein, they will clean and disinfect the area with an alcohol swab.

    • Then they will insert a small needle into your vein to draw a blood sample. This might feel like a small pinch.

    • After they have inserted the needle, the required amount of blood will be collected in a test tube.

    • Once they have collected enough blood to test, they’ll remove the needle and hold a cotton ball or gauze on the site to stop any bleeding.

    • They will put a band-aid over the pricked site, and the blood collection is finished.

    • This process takes less than five minutes.

Why Take a Blood Sugar Test?

The sugar or glucose that is generated from the food we eat sticks to the hemoglobin in our blood. The main aim of the random blood sugar test or the RBS test is to check blood sugar levels in a person. Having a blood sugar level above the range of normal can be an indication that the person has diabetes mellitus. Along with the diagnosis of different diseases, the random blood sugar test also helps in the timely treatment of the disease through proper monitoring during as well as after the treatment. A doctor might prescribe the RBS test if the patient has a family history of diabetes or is overweight.

Additionally, your doctor might prescribe the test if you show the following symptoms:

    • Dry mouth and dehydration

    • Unexpected weight loss

    • Blurry vision

    • Slow healing process

    • Frequent urination

    .

Who Should Take the RBS Test?

Your doctor may include glucose testing in a panel of tests for a background check of your health information, such as during an annual examination. Your doctor might also want to screen you for elevated glucose if you are at a higher than the average risk of developing diabetes.

    • Risk factors for diabetes include:

    • Being 45 years of age or older

    • Being overweight or obese

    • If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

    • Prediabetes

    • Having family members with diabetes

    • A lack of physical activity

    • Polycystic ovarian syndrome

In case you are pregnant, your doctor may recommend glucose testing to screen for gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that is linked to hormone changes during pregnancy. Having gestational diabetes can be very harmful to the mother and the foetus if it is left untreated and can increase the risk of developing diabetes later in life.

Your doctor may also order the glucose testing if you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes, including:

    • Frequent urination

    • Excessive hunger or thirst

    • Tingling or a loss of sensing the feel in the hands or a feet

    • Blurred vision

    • An abnormal number of infections

    • Unexplained weight loss

    • Feeling very tired

    • Skin that is dry

    • Sores that don’t heal quickly

Additionally, the doctor may order glucose testing if you have any symptoms of low blood sugar or any other health conditions. Glucose testing is also a very important part of managing prediabetes and diabetes after they have been diagnosed.

If the result shows higher than normal glucose levels, this may mean that you have or are at risk of getting diabetes.

The higher glucose levels may also be a sign of:

    • Kidney disease

    • Hyperthyroidism

    • Pancreatitis

    • Pancreatic cancer

If the results show lower than normal glucose levels, it may be a sign of:

    • Hypothyroidism

    • Too much insulin or other diabetes medicine

    • Liver disease

If your sugar levels are not normal, it doesn't mean you necessarily have a medical condition needing treatment. High-stress levels and certain medicines can also affect glucose levels. To check what your results mean, talk to your healthcare provider.

A level of 200 mg/dL or higher means you have diabetes. Your healthcare provider will recommend a fasting blood sugar, HbA1c test, or glucose tolerance test depending on your random blood sugar values.

In general, 105 mg/dL is considered normal for random blood sugar.

Generally, 150 mg/dL of random blood sugar is considered borderline for diabetes. To rule this out, healthcare practitioners may advise fasting blood sugar (FBS) and postprandial blood sugar (PPBS).

The normal range for random blood sugar in India is less than 140 mg/dL. Above 140 to 199 mg/dL is considered prediabetes. Above 200 mg/dL levels are considered diabetes.
