What is the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibody IgG test?
A CMV IgG antibody blood test detects if a pregnant woman has had CMV. A positive result indicates a present or past CMV infection. A second blood test, called CMV IgM antibody, will help evaluate whether the CMV infection is current or past.
When is the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibody IgG test recommended?
It is recommended:When a person, especially a young adult, pregnant woman, or immune-deficient person, has flu-like symptoms for a prolonged period.Symptoms include fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, and extreme fatigue. Rarely, a rash, cough, or diarrhea may occur. These symptoms are not specific to CMV infection and may be caused by other conditions. Unfortunately, often the first time a pregnant woman is aware of CMV is when she has a baby who has been diagnosed with congenital CMV infection. Therefore, these blood tests are needed to accurately diagnose a CMV infection during pregnancy.
What does it measure?
The Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibody IgG test: Evaluates if the person has ever been exposed to CMV infection. CMV IgG antibodies typically begin to develop around 3 weeks after initial exposure and remain in a person's body for the rest of their life. CMV IgG levels rise during the active infection, then stabilize as the CMV infection resolves and the virus becomes inactive. After the initial infection, the virus will normally become inactive and IgG antibodies will provide immunity to primary infection. A CMV IgG test can be recommended for anyone who wishes to determine if they have been exposed to CMV in the past. CMV testing is typically ordered for pregnant women due to the risk of passing the virus to their infants. It may also be ordered when a person has been diagnosed with HIV or other conditions that affect the immune system.
