    What is a Homocysteine test?
Homocysteine is an amino acid that can be linked to many vitamins, like folic acid, B6, and B12. Deficiencies of these vitamins may occur due to elevated levels of Homocysteine. Research suggests that people who have elevated Homocysteine levels have a much greater risk of heart attack or stroke than those with normal levels.
When is the Homocysteine test recommended?
It is recommended:To monitor for heart attack and stroke, especially in people with no risk factors but with a family history of cardiovascular diseases. To find and diagnose inherited diseases called in newborn babies and infants. To detect a deficiency of vitamin B6, B12, or folic acid.
    What does it measure?
The Homocysteine test:Analyses the levels of Homocysteine in the blood.Homocysteine is an amino acid that is present in a very small amount in all the cells of the body. That is because the body converts Homocysteine normally into other products quickly. Since vitamins B6, B12, and folate are necessary to metabolise Homocysteine, increased levels of the amino acid may be a sign of deficiency in those vitamins. This test determines the levels of Homocysteine in the blood and urine.Increased Homocysteine may also be related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease (fatty deposits in peripheral arteries), and hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Higher levels of Homocysteine increase the risk of blood clot formation in vessels and may lead to heart attack and stroke.
