What is an HBA1c (Glycosylated Haemoglobin) test?

HbA1c is used to measure the amount of blood sugar (glucose) attached to haemoglobin over 3 months. This combination of haemoglobin and glucose is called HbA1c. Haemoglobin is a component of red blood cells that carry oxygen from the lungs to the whole body. The HbA1c test shows the average amount of glucose present in haemoglobin for 3 months. It is usually done once in three months because typically the lifespan of a red blood cell is 3 months. It is used to check for diabetes or prediabetes in adults and paediatrics. Prediabetes indicates that you are at risk of getting diabetes. If you are already a diabetic patient then it will help you in checking your glucose levels.

When is an HBA1c (Glycosylated Haemoglobin) test recommended?

The test for HbA1c (Glycosylated Haemoglobin) is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. For people who have diabetes, the test is used to indicate how well diabetes has been controlled over the last few months. People who are having diabetes are advised to have this test every 3 to 6 months, or more frequently if it is not under control.

    What does it measure?

Glycosylated Haemoglobin Test measures the percentage of glycosylated haemoglobin in blood which reflects the average blood glucose over a period of past two to three months (8 - 12 weeks). Haemoglobin is the protein that is found in Red Blood Cells and is responsible for transporting oxygen. Of the different types of haemoglobin, Haemoglobin A is predominant. With the elevation of blood sugar levels, some glucose binds spontaneously to Haemoglobin A (this binding is called Glycosylation or Glycation) and remains bound for the complete lifetime of the RBC, which is 120 days normally. The higher the level of glucose in the blood, the greater is the amount of it binding to Haemoglobin A Haemoglobin A1c is the dominant form of Glycoslated Haemoglobin. As RBCs die and are replaced, Haemoglobin A1c is cleared and slowly replaced with non-glycosylated haemoglobin. Measurement of HbA1c (Glycoslated Haemoglobin) level over a period of time gives an indication of the level of glucose in the blood over the specified period of time. This will help in the diagnosis of diabetes and is useful for monitoring the effectiveness of measures taken to reduce blood sugar levels.
